Noise Characteristics of Abrasive Waterjets
Brenner et al* did an experimental study of the noise characteristics of abrasive waterjets in various conditions. Tests were done with a pump capable of 250 Mpa pressure and 25 l/min flow rate. Quartz sand was used as abrasive. Noise characteristic measurements were done at the operator’s position by using a German made noise gage RFT-00.023. The measurement results are summarized in the following table.
where the admissible data were from “Noise Characteristics Standards for Machines PTM 12.44.022-78) and the operation modes were as follows:
l Mode 1: Jet in free air (100 Mpa pressure)
l Mode 2: Jet impacted a concrete block with a standoff distance of 5 mm (100 Mpa pressure)
l Mode 3: Jet passed through a hole of 100 mm depth in the concrete block (100 Mpa pressure)
l Mode 4: Like Mode 2, but on a limestone block.
l Mode 5: Nozzle was immersed in the hole of limestone blocks at the depth of 120 mm (100 Mpa pressure).
l Mode 6: Like Mode 2, but the nozzle and the space between nozzle and the concrete block were covered with a noise absorptive case.
l Mode 7: Like Mode 2, but at 250 Mpa pressure.
l Mode 8: Like Mode 6, but at 250 Mpa pressure.
